Total War: Three Kingdoms
Total War: Three Kingdoms is the twelfth main installment in the Total War series, developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega. This PC game combines turn-based strategy with real-time tactics, allowing players to command large armies across expansive maps. Set during China’s Three Kingdoms period from 220 to 280 AD, the game challenges players to lead one of 11 factions to dominate and unify China.
In Total War: Three Kingdoms, players strategize on both political and military fronts, making alliances, managing resources, and engaging in epic battles that shape the course of history. Each faction offers a unique playstyle, characters, and objectives, providing diverse challenges and opportunities for expansion and conquest.
Gameplay
The gameplay mechanics of Total War: Three Kingdoms maintain the core elements of the Total War series while introducing significant innovations. Players choose from 11 factions, each with unique generals known as Heroes, who possess distinct abilities and personality traits.
These Heroes are categorized into five types: Champion, Vanguard, Strategist, Commander, and Sentinel. Champions excel at defeating enemy heroes, Vanguards are adept at eliminating regular units, Strategists debuff enemies and provide bonuses, Commanders balance combat prowess with support abilities, and Sentinels excel in prolonged battles against both units and heroes. Generals have independent personalities and needs that players must manage, as neglecting them can lead to various consequences.
A new gameplay mechanic, the Wu Xing system, assigns elemental attributes—fire, earth, water, wood, and metal—to each unit. These elements affect gameplay differently; for example, fire reduces military costs and boosts melee damage, while earth reduces construction costs and enhances morale. Understanding these elemental interactions is crucial for strategic planning.
Another innovative feature is Guanxi, a system based on social relationships among generals. These relationships evolve based on past interactions, friendliness, jealousy, or hostility, influencing gameplay dynamics without direct player control.
Combat mechanics resemble those of previous Total War titles, allowing players to command cavalry and infantry units on the battlefield. Generals can engage in duels, providing unique rewards when victorious. The game offers two modes: Romance, where generals possess heroic abilities akin to those in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Records, which offers a more historically accurate portrayal without superhuman feats.
Story
The campaign begins amidst the decline of the Han dynasty in 190 AD, characterized by oppressive rule and widespread chaos. Warlords rise against the tyrannical emperor and his ally, Dong Zhuo, sparking civil war. Players align with factions led by legendary warlords like Lu Bu, Cao Cao, or Liu Bei, shaping the future of China through strategic decisions and military conquests.
Reception
Total War: Three Kingdoms received positive early impressions, with critics lauding its dual gameplay modes and the depth added by the Guanxi system. The game has become a favorite among strategy enthusiasts, praised for its immersive setting and innovative gameplay mechanics.
