WarPlan is a sophisticated WWII simulation that strikes a careful balance between in-depth strategy and approachable gameplay, inspired by classic board games. With a flexible engine and extensive database, the game delivers a detailed recreation of World War II.
Kraken Studios has designed WarPlan for both ease of use and tactical depth. The game’s streamlined interface minimizes micromanagement, helping players focus on strategic decision-making.
Scales and Mapping
WarPlan covers up to 70 different countries on a vast map that scales distances using the Peters projection (30 miles per hex). Units represent large formations, with land units between 15,000 and 60,000 troops, air units with 300-400 planes, and naval units comprising major warships and support vessels.
Combat and Unit Customization
Combat occurs on land, air, and sea. Multihex land attacks let players maneuver tactically and create breakthroughs. Air forces can automatically aid land combat, while sea warfare includes complex systems for different battle types, including carrier and submarine actions. Zones of control limit enemy movement, enhancing strategic depth.
There are 20 unit types, each with unique attributes and national specializations, supported by 17 technological advancements and five specializations. Units can combine into larger formations, detach divisions, and gain support from generals and 11 types of support units, creating endless configuration options.
Managing Nations and Resources
WarPlan includes detailed economic management, with resources like oil and manpower, as well as systems for trade and supply routes. The game features 47 potential unit setups and a supply network that relies on cities, rails, and headquarters for a realistic logistical challenge. Diplomatic options offer players the ability to sway national loyalty, declare wars, or initiate coups, influencing the broader geopolitical landscape.
Map and Environmental Factors
The map’s hex grid consists of 15 terrain types with unique effects on movement, defense, and resource access. Players will encounter 12 resource types and five strategic resources, while Fog of War and five distinct weather conditions impact visibility and gameplay, keeping every session dynamic.
